Klinkhammer Olive
Klinkhammer is a popular fly pattern used in fly fishing that was developed by Dutch fly tyer Hans van Klinken in the 1980s. The Klinkhammer fly is a versatile pattern that can imitate a variety of aquatic insects, including mayflies, caddisflies, and midges. It is particularly effective when fishing for trout and grayling in both still waters and streams.
The Klinkhammer fly is designed to sit low in the water with the body hanging below the surface and the hackle and wing sitting on the surface, imitating an emerging insect that is struggling to free itself from its nymphal shuck. The fly is usually tied with a slender body and a parachute-style hackle that wraps around the body, helping to support it in the surface film.
To fish the Klinkhammer fly, it is typically cast upstream and allowed to drift naturally downstream while twitching the rod tip to create movement in the fly. The fly can also be stripped in using short, sharp pulls to imitate an insect that is trying to break free from its shuck.
