Hawthorn fly is a popular and effective fly pattern for springtime trout fishing. Its large size and distinctive appearance make it an easy target for fish, and its behaviour and habitat make it a prime candidate for dry fly fishing.
Appearance: The Hawthorn fly is a relatively large insect, with a body length of around 1-1.5cm. The body is dark brown or black, and the wings are clear with brown veins. The male Hawthorn fly has noticeably longer legs than the female.

Habitat: Hawthorn flies are typically found near hawthorn trees in the springtime, as this is where they lay their eggs. They are often seen hovering and swarming around the trees.

Behaviour: Hawthorn flies are not strong fliers and are easy prey for trout. They are often blown onto the surface of the water, where they become an easy target for fish.

Fishing technique: The most common way to fish the Hawthorn fly is to use a dry fly pattern that imitates the insect. This can be done using a floating line and a long leader, with the fly presented on or just below the surface of the water. The fly can be twitched or pulled gently to imitate the movement of the insect.
